A new six-hole golf course is opening on the east coast this spring. In this week’s podcast, host Dave Berner talks to architect Ian Scott-Taylor about the genesis of the course.

“It was a project done by a company called the McKee Group, who are a housing development company,” Scott-Taylor says. “They had bought a property that had a design for a nine-hole golf course. They asked me to go in and have a look at it. When I saw it, I thought, ‘this is a shooting gallery.’ There was no way they were going to get nine holes in there. I persuaded the homeowners and the McKee Group to go for a six-hole golf course instead. They thought I was just about ready for a straight jacket.”

Author Christina Ricci talks about her book “A Girl’s On-Course Survival Guide to Golf.”

“It includes basically every solid fundamental a beginner would need from tee to green,” she says.

Pelican Hill Golf Club in California is greening, according to Sat Tamaribuchi, vice president of environmental affairs at the Irvine Company, which owns the golf course.

Plus, PGA instructor Chuck Evans talks about the “four lines of golf.”

“There are four lines that we use that are geometrical lines that help ensure that players have good alignment through the golf ball,” Evans says.

The Golf Channel’s “The Big Break” reality show has been a huge hit. In this week’s podcast, host Dave Berner talks to contestant Elizabeth Stuart about her role on the show.

“I’m basically laid back. I’m out there to have a good time, I don’t want to cause any drama,” Stuart says. “I basically tell it how it is though. If you do something dumb, or you deserve to get made fun of, I’ll probably do that - but in a good way, you know.”

TravelGolf.com’s Tim McDonald gives the skinny on golf in Branson, Missouri.

“I went to Branson this past week,” McDonald says. “There’s not a lot of golf there. [But] If you’re going to Branson … you should definitely bring your clubs because there are some really good courses.”

“It’s just about all of the games you’ve ever played on the golf course with your buddies, trying to take their quarters and dollars,” Logan says.

And: Equipment Editor Kiel Christianson contemplates what it would be like to call Augusta National your eternal home.

In this week’s podcast, host Dave Berner talks to Pam Swensen, CEO of the Executive Women’s Golf Association.

“We’ve been around since 1991, and we got started because 28 women went to attend a golf clinic,” Swensen says. “These women came together and thought. ‘this is a great idea. Yes, I should be using golf to build relationships and to make deals on the golf course’ - and it mushroomed!”

Brandon Tucker talks about the great golf on the Waccamaw Golf Trail in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

“I’ve played probably 40 or 50 golf courses in Myrtle Beach since I’ve been living here,” Tucker says. “I’d have to say that more of my favorite courses are going to come from this part of Myrtle Beach. I just think they’ve got a little more character.”

Looking for a great golf community in the Southeast? Head to The Landings in Georgia, says National Golf Editor Tim McDonald.

“It’s just one of those places … that sticks in the back of your mind,” McDonald says. “It’s on this beautiful barrier island that’s right outside of Savannah. I was very pleasantly surprised, I’ll put it that way. It kind of reminds me of a small version of Hilton Head.”

Plus, OnlyTravelBags.com caters to travelling golfers, says site owner John Maley.

“What we sell are products that cover the whole entire golf bag,” Maley says.

What all these countries “kind of share is that golf was dormant all during the Cold War. So these are all raw, developing countries in terms of their golf,” Tucker says. “I know that when you think Europe golf, you think Scotland and Ireland and the rest of the UK – and then you also think Spain and Portugal – so we’ve got pretty much an entire side of the continent we haven’t even touched.”

Is Tiger’s temper a problem? In this week’s podcast, host Dave Berner talks to Brandon Tucker about the recent controversy surrounding Woods’ verbal attack of a photographer at Doral.

“I wrote a blog following the Doral incident,” Tucker says. “I wasn’t so mad that he went off on the photographer, but that Tuesday, I believe, he was interviewed by ESPN and they gave him every chance in the world to apologize, or even recognize that he might have been able to handle it in a little classier way, and that’s what really disturbed me. Tiger’s temper just seems to be the only chink in his armor. Everyone has that moment where they’ve been in Tiger’s gallery where they see him go off the handle at something.”

Author Curt Sampson talks about his new book, Golf Dads.

“Golf links generations because it’s so often learned from a parent, most often the father,” Sampson says. “It’s like a gold pocket watch, an heirloom, to me.”

Plus, in the first of a two-part series on healthy golf, Dr. Ronald Greisamer, a knee surgeon at Mount Sinai Hospital, gives a few tips for staying healthy this golf season.

“I think a lot of people who think of Hawaii, they might group all the islands together, but once you go over there you realize just how different the islands are,” Tucker says. “Kauai is one of the smaller islands … and the golf is great.”

National Golf Editor Tim McDonald is getting geared up for a golf trip to Sweden.

“What I’d like to do is get a variety [of golf],” he says. “I’d like to play some of the top courses in the country, and then just some of the average everyday courses that regular people play.”

Plus, Berner takes listeners undercover inside Mike Ditka’s golf dome outside Chicago.

In this week’s podcast, host Dave Berner talks to National Golf Editor Tim McDonald about music and golf, including the University of Georgia Golf Course, in Athens, Ga.

“It’s known as the Boston of the Southeast,” McDonald says. “You can find almost any kind of music here.”

Senior Writer Chris Baldwin talks about his recent tour of the Blue Shark Golf Club and other Bahamas golf courses.

“They have like 700 islands scattered around, and there are only 30 golf courses in all the islands. So the golf is not a huge thing yet; it’s still building a foothold there,” Baldwin says.

Plus, Equipment Editor Kiel Christianson has discovered a new toy called The Golf Mat by Vijay Singh that will help keep your game in shape even in the off season.

“It’s called The Golf Mat,” Christianson says. “It’s a big practice mat, but this is the first mat that has give to it.”

Baseball’s spring training is a great time to catch your favorite ball players, but it’s also a golf opportunity. In this week’s podcast, Senior Staff Writer Chris Baldwin tells host Dave Berner it might be best to skip the baseball and head straight to the golf course.

“I’m all for the idea of spring training - you know, some sunshine, beer and baseball,” Baldwin says. “But I think you might want to skip the baseball part of it. I’m a big baseball fan, but I think spring training itself is an overrated experience.”

National Golf Editor Tim McDonald talks about golf on Amelia Island, Florida.

“You’ll get resort golf,” McDonald says. “There are four courses there, one of which is members only. They have a real short course there called the Ocean Links course - very scenic, but extremely tight and narrow.”

PGA instructor Chuck Evans explains the intricacies of how your body works in relation to your swing.

“It’s called Forest Hills Golf Club. It’s about 45 minutes north of Moscow,” he says. “Golf is kind of a rare bird in Russia at this point. It’s still a game for the very rich in Moscow.”

In this week’s podcast, host Dave Berner talks to Darrin Helfrick, golf general manager at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa, about a new package that will get you close to the PGA Tour action when the resort hosts the World Golf Championships – CA Championship 2008 later this month.

“It’s a golf package we’ve created over our PGA Tour event,” Helfrick says. “It includes a room, breakfast each day, and a round of golf on two of the courses we have open during tournament week. It also includes tickets to the event.”

PGA instructor Chuck Evans gives a few tips on conquering the mental game of golf.

“I’ve seen a number of players that could be on the PGA Tour today because they have good stroke mechanics, they know how to score, but they’re absolutely brain dead,” Evans says. “Which means they don’t know how to think on the golf course.”

Frank Thomas, former technical director of the USGA, talks about his new book, Just Hit It.

“Basically, what we’re interested in is letting people understand why they play the game of golf and also how equipment works, and how to select your equipment,” he says.

Understanding the patterns of your body’s movement in the golf swing will help you efficiently improve your golf fitness, says Dr. Greg Rose of the Titleist Performance Institute.

Vancouver Island is loaded with great golf, and the season is just beginning, says Patrick Meagher of Golf Vancouver Island.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to golf in a number of different spots, including Hawaii and on down to the west coast of North America and into the BC Rockies and Banf,” Meagher says. “And easily the courses on the island stack up because they’re a little lesser known than some of the other areas and destinations. You don’t pay as much as you would in the more recognized destinations.”

Think Disney World in Orlando is all about Mickey? Think again. The resort also has four excellent golf courses. In this week’s podcast, host Dave Berner talks to Brandon Tucker about golf at Disney World.

“The four courses there are actually quite good,” Tucker says. “There are four championship courses, two of which host a PGA Tour event. And they stack up with the great golf resorts in America.”

The Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa has a new golf vacation package for men. General Manager Andrew Stegen talks about “Stogies and Sticks.”

“It’s a three-night, four-day package, and it kicks off with a bourbon and cigar dinner,” he says. “We’re partnering with Jim Beam to do that, and we’re partnering with a local supplier of cigars.”

In this week’s podcast, host Dave Berner talks to Senior Staff Writer Chris Baldwin about recent changes at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am celebrity golf tournament which kicks off this week.

“This year, only three of the top 10 players are playing,” Baldwin says. “It seems like a lot of these players don’t want to play with the celebrities any more. They feel like they’re celebrities in their own right.”

In part two of his conversation about the 2008 PGA Merchandise Show, Brandon Tucker reveals a few more of the excellent golf gadgets he discovered down in Orlando.

Heard about “Stack and Tilt?” Those two words are all the rage in golf instruction these days. PGA instructor Chuck Evans, executive director of the Medicus Golf Institute, explains the swing-improvement technique.

“Aaron Baddeley, Mike Weir, a bunch of guys are starting to use this, and they’re starting to have success they’ve never seen,” Evans says.

In this week’s podcast, Equipment Editor Kiel Christianson talks to host Dave Berner about PowerBuilt’s new FZ-1 line, which has Fuzzy Zoeller as an endorser and looks to bring PowerBuilt back to its glory days.

“They’re trying to bring back some of those glory days, their new Citation FZ-1 Driver 460cc is one of the big-head drivers, they’re very nice looking clubs” Christianson said. “They’re so new they’re not even on the PowerBuilt Web site yet.”

Golf writer Mike Bailey talks about golf in Las Vegas, including his round at Rio Secco Golf Club.

“They’re doing something unique, by the way,” they’re transitioning to Bermuda. So they did not overseed, and come March they’re going to be very glad they did it,” said Bailey, who admitted to four-putting twice on the tough greens. “It’s a very good course … Some spectacular views of the city.”

Finally, Brandon Tucker found some fun gadgets at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando.

“I was checking out some of the gadgets, the new kind of quirky things that would change your game forever,” said Tucker. “I think some of these I’m about to talk about are kind of ridiculous, but I’ll let the listener decide.”
